The Guaranteed Way to Reduce Mold and Mildew from Your Exterior Wood Siding.
The Guaranteed Way to Reduce Mold and Mildew from Your Exterior Wood Siding.

First is a disclaimer; this post’s title is somewhat of a misnomer. Guaranteeing your siding will stay mold-free isn’t as simple as one step. However, this blog will bring to light a few ways to reduce mold and mildew build up. While it may not seem immediately necessary your exterior siding needs some care. This will require preventative measures, regular cleaning, and some deep cleaning and maintenance.

Preventative Measures

Obviously, we understand that if you live in Pinellas County or the Tampa Bay Area, there’s nothing you can do about the moisture. That’s between God and the meteorologists. But there’s measures you can administer to minimize places that are ideal for mold growth, including:

Trimming trees and shrubs: Eliminate dark, moist places against your siding. Also, avoid planting shrubbery or trees too close to your siding, giving your home a wide berth between the siding and nature. Try to provide as much direct sunlight as possible. Sunlight is nature’s disinfectant.
Unclog and properly slope gutters: Eliminate overflowing and leaking gutters that will add to the moisture on your siding.

Keep sprinklers off the siding: Keep siding dry by ensuring sprinklers don’t continuously drip water over the siding.

Clean Regularly

At least every couple of months, scrub your siding. By using a garden hose and soft brush, you can clear away the moisture and spores you might not be able to see growing on your siding. This prevents buildup that eventually turns into mold and mildew.

Maintain Mold-Free Zones

Keep an eye out for the tell-tale yellow-green splotches of mold and mildew. While you should regularly clean, if you see a spot crop up, you know you’re overdue for a good scrub. Also, replace old and worn siding. Cracks, warping, pitting, or holes offer nooks and crannies mold and mildew love to camp in.

Bring In The Big Guns

Sometimes, you’re too late, and the your exterior siding has become victim to the foul-smelling bacteria. In that case, to reduce mold and mildew you can clean and treat with a solution of 70% water and 30% white vinegar. This is a great all-purpose cleaner for vinyl siding. It’s not too strong, but it helps eliminate stains and discourage mold from growing.

If you need the home cleaning equivalent of napalm, you can make a stronger solution with:

⅓ cup powdered laundry detergent
⅔ cup powdered household cleaner
1-quart liquid laundry bleach
1-gallon water

Throw everything in a large bucket, and use gloves and face protection to wash the affected area. This should kill even the most stubborn mold. Try not to do this too often, as using bleach on siding too often will start to break it down (not to mention what will happen to the grass at the base of your house)
